Von Willebrand disease is a lifelong bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly due to low levels or malfunctioning of von Willebrand factor — a vital protein involved in clot formation. This condition interferes with the body’s natural ability to stop bleeding.
Most people with von Willebrand disease are born with the condition, inheriting it from one or both parents. However, symptoms may not appear for years and sometimes first become evident after dental procedures, surgeries, or childbirth. Although there is currently no cure, proper treatment and lifestyle management allow most individuals to lead full and active lives.
