Treatment for Von Willebrand Disease

Treatment depends on disease severity and the individual’s lifestyle and health needs. Healthcare providers use medications to control bleeding and prevent complications.

  • Desmopressin (DDAVP): Increases von Willebrand factor levels in the bloodstream and is the most commonly used therapy.
  • Von Willebrand Factor Infusions: Administered to stop bleeding episodes or prevent surgical bleeding; patients with severe disease may require routine infusions.
  • Antifibrinolytic Medications: Prevent clot breakdown and are helpful during dental work or heavy menstrual cycles.
  • Birth Control Pills: Estrogen-containing contraceptives can help regulate menstrual bleeding and raise von Willebrand factor levels.
