Von Willebrand Disease Treatment by Hematologist

What Is Von Willebrand Disease (VWD)?

Von Willebrand disease is a lifelong bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly due to low levels or malfunctioning of von Willebrand factor — a vital protein involved in clot formation. This condition interferes with the body’s natural ability to stop bleeding.

Most people with von Willebrand disease are born with the condition, inheriting it from one or both parents. However, symptoms may not appear for years and sometimes first become evident after dental procedures, surgeries, or childbirth. Although there is currently no cure, proper treatment and lifestyle management allow most individuals to lead full and active lives.

Symptoms of Von Willebrand Disease

Many individuals with von Willebrand disease experience mild or no symptoms. Those with moderate to severe disease may develop the following:

  • Frequent nosebleeds lasting longer than 10 minutes
  • Prolonged bleeding from cuts or injuries
  • Easy bruising with large, raised bruises
  • Iron-deficiency anemia
  • Excessive bleeding after surgery or dental procedures
  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods
  • Heavy bleeding following childbirth or miscarriage
  • Blood in stool or urine

Treatment for Von Willebrand Disease

Treatment depends on disease severity and the individual’s lifestyle and health needs. Healthcare providers use medications to control bleeding and prevent complications.

  • Desmopressin (DDAVP): Increases von Willebrand factor levels in the bloodstream and is the most commonly used therapy.
  • Von Willebrand Factor Infusions: Administered to stop bleeding episodes or prevent surgical bleeding; patients with severe disease may require routine infusions.
  • Antifibrinolytic Medications: Prevent clot breakdown and are helpful during dental work or heavy menstrual cycles.
  • Birth Control Pills: Estrogen-containing contraceptives can help regulate menstrual bleeding and raise von Willebrand factor levels.
