Hypercoagulability Blood Clot Disorder Treatment

What Is Hypercoagulability?

Hypercoagulability, also called thrombophilia, is a condition in which the blood has an increased tendency to clot. This abnormal clot formation can block veins or arteries and result in serious complications such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), stroke, or heart attack.

This disorder may be inherited or acquired later in life due to medical conditions, lifestyle factors, or certain medications.

Symptoms of Hypercoagulability

Symptoms depend on where blood clots form and the severity of complications. Common warning signs include:

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Swelling, pain, warmth, and redness in the legs
  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE): Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, coughing (sometimes with blood)
  • Stroke: Facial drooping, weakness on one side, speech difficulty, loss of balance
  • Heart Attack: Chest pressure, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath

Treatment for Hypercoagulability

Treatment focuses on preventing new clots and controlling existing ones while addressing underlying risk factors.

  • Anticoagulants: Heparin, warfarin, and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs)
  • Compression Stockings: Helpful in preventing DVT
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Regular exercise, weight control, smoking cessation
  • Medication Monitoring: Adjusting therapy for patients with secondary causes

Causes of Hypercoagulability

Hypercoagulability may arise from genetic factors or conditions acquired later in life.

Inherited Causes
  • Factor V Leiden mutation
  • Prothrombin gene mutation (G20210A)
  • Protein C deficiency
  • Protein S deficiency
  • Antithrombin deficiency
  • Elevated homocysteine levels
Acquired Causes
  • Prolonged immobility or long travel
  • Major surgery or trauma
  • Cancer
  • Hormonal therapy or oral contraceptives
  • Pregnancy
  • Antiphospholipid syndrome
  • Chronic inflammatory diseases
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
